Fly Field Guide

The ODW

A quintessential junk fly that works when nothing else seems to, the ODW proves that two wrongs make a right by combining the often-frowned-upon worm and egg. The sparkle braid does a great job of replicating a worm’s natural iridescence and during runoff times, the darker colors work best, as they contrast in off-color water. During spawning season the hot orange tungsten bead can easily be mistaken for naturally present eggs, another reliable and effective food source. Offering up bacon and eggs in one fly might seem like too much of a good thing but that’s how this pattern got its name.

HOW WE LIKE TO FISH IT:

  • Behind a larger leech pattern or non-articulated streamer.
  • Nymphed under an indicator, at either the top or bottom position.
