Fly Field Guide

The Crackleback

What they lack in size, midges make up for in abundance. They’re the most reliable year-round source of food for trout, though they are most effective from late fall through early spring due to the outsized portion of the menu they represent in the colder months. The Crackleback Midge was born on a day when the hatch was so thick we could barely see and it has enticed fish throughout the Rocky Mountains for more than a decade.

Built on the foundation of a zebra midge, the crystal flash wings and shuck dial things up a notch. Tied on a scud hook for increased strength, in sizes ranging from #18 to #22, this pattern should be fished under an indicator for best results.

HOW WE LIKE TO FISH IT:

  • Nymphed at a depth that places it midway up or higher in the water column.
  • As a dropper under a smaller dry fly, anytime there is midge activity on the surface.
