Griffith's Gnat
The Griffith's Gnat is a classic dry fly designed to imitate clusters of small midges, or single adult midges. One of the few year-round dry files, the Griffith's Gnat can convince fish to eat it during midday hatches in the winter or anytime fish are subtly sipping during barely visible surface activity.
This fly sits low in the surface film, making it less likely to spook fish in slower water. This quality can make it difficult to see on the surface, so we usually fish it 12-18" behind a more visible dry fly in a double dry setup.
HOW WE LIKE TO FISH IT:
- By itself in low, clear water when there is midge activity.
- Behind a larger, more visible fly when you notice subtle surface eats happening.
